Police in Germany have clashed with thousands of demonstrators protesting against the far-right policies of the National Democratic Party (NPD).

German riot police used water canon to disperse rock-throwing protesters who had rallied in their thousands around the northern cities of Hamburg and Hanover on the second consecutive day of demonstrations against the right-wing NPD on Saturday. German riots were sparked on Friday after scores of NPD fans, with alleged neo Nazi links, tried to sabotage a left wing party musical festival in Hamburg.

At least 12 German law enforcement officers and several demonstrators, who had clashed with the police on NPD supporters, were injured in the largest German port city scuffles. Security forces have so far arrested tens of protesters across the state.

Also on Saturday, thousands of German citizens marched through the streets of Hanover, demanding a ban on the National Democratic Party activities. A number of local authorities have also taken part in the recent demonstrations against the NPD that has ‘strong connections within the government,’ German media reported.

German police remain on alert over the recent skirmishes across the country.
